Boombox presents monthly showcases of experimental works by a wide array of artists.
Contemporary dance, theatre, music, visual art, and other disciplines find a home in this unique space where audiences are invited into close relationship with raw artistic experimentation.
A Brief History of Boombox:
Boombox was founded in 2016 by three recently-graduated dance artists, Katie Lowen, Diego Romero, and Ileanna Cheladyn, in response to a lack of affordable venues and rehearsal spaces in Vancouver.
From 2016-2020, the space was generously shared with the community, and a wide range of dance, theatre, and visual artists embraced the rough-around-the-edges, DIY circumstances that are Boombox to create exciting experimental performances as unique as the venue they were presented in. Boombox quickly became a special hub for intimate social events around bold irreverent works, building its own culture of artistic and community exchange.
Between 2020-2023, Boombox was on hiatus due to Covid-19 restrictions, and losing its original location on Great Northern Way. In this precarious moment, Here For Now Collective stepped up to take over operations and relocate Boombox to its new home outside The Birdhouse, a queer arts and culture warehouse space in East Vancouver.
Having seen Boombox’s immense impact over the years, and with a firm conviction that its existence is vital to Vancouver’s dance and performance community, Here For Now is excited to ensure its continuation as a space for Vancouver’s vibrant community of bold, experimental artists.
